Not only is Hell's Kitchen a historical neighbhorhood in New York City filled with culture and history, it is also the epicenter of some of Marvel Comics' most iconic characters and stories. Netflix also brought these comicbook heroes (or anti-heroes) to life with live-action tv shows filmed throughout various hisotrical sites in New York City. This site will celebrate Hell's Kitchen as a neighbhorhood in NYC, a comic book battleground, and the various New York City locations where filming of said live-action comic book shows were filmed. Hell’s Kitchen is a place to do it up. There’s cuisine from around the globe: Argentinean empanadas, Japanese ramen, Druze bourekas, Thai street food. There’s all kinds of nightlife: jazz haunts, LGBTQ+ clubs, dive bars, rooftop lounges. Theater and dance thrive a stone’s throw from Broadway. The High Line’s northern entrance is at the rail yards on this neighborhood’s southern tip. And by the glorious Hudson River Park, there’s the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and the Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises departure point, so you can tour a ship or set sail on one.
Not only is Hell's Kitchen a historical neighborhood in New York City, it's also the epcienter of these iconic comic book characters in the Marvel Universe: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Punisher.
Leading the way in bringing television onto the web with high-speed and quality streaming video, Netflix hosted several live-action series behind the creative vision of Marvel Television in bringing some of its most iconic crime-fighting comic book heroes to life. The shows generated cult-like fandom all over the globe but was consequently cancelled in 2018 and 2019 due to Disney's intentions to create their own streaming service with the Marvel intellectual properties (comic book characters) that they now own.
Krysten Ritter stars as Jessica Jones, a superhero who opens her own detective agency. The series has run for 3 seasons and she has fought chilling villains such as Kilgrave and has mingled with other well-known New York superheroes such as Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.
Jon Bernthal stars Punisher as he tries to clear his name against powerful enemies within the U.S. government. During his pursuits he often crosses paths with other New York superheroes and villains such as Daredevil, Elektra and Kingpin.
Charlie Cox stars as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil, a blind lawyer by day, fights crime as a masked vigilante by night. He fights the evil doings of Kingpin in his New York City neighbhorhood of Hell's Kitchen and often crosses paths with other complex (but heroic in their own way) superheroes Jessica Jones and the Punisher in the process.
Danny Rand aka Iron Fist is a martial arts master and is the lone beholder of the Iron Fist. Rand was raised by monks in K'un-Lun after he lost his parents while flying over Asia. He comes back to New York City to reclaim his father's company, Rand Enterprises and finds out everything he knows and was told has been nothing further from the truth. He unravels the truth with his adopted family the Meachums and saves the city. Iron Fist crosses over into both the Luke Cage and Defenders series in teaming up with the New York superheroes in kicking butt.
Carl Lucas aka Luke Cage is the hero of Harlem, New York. He has unbreakable skin and superhuman strength. Fighting famous villains from the comic book like Cottonmouth, Diamondback, and Bushmaster, Luke Cage goes from a man just midning his business to the King of Harlem. He crosses over to the Jessica Jones and Defenders series in making these New York City Superheroes a complete and unbeatable team.
Given that New York City has so much history and culture with its concrete jungle-esque skyscrapers, waterfronts overlooking the beautiful skyline, along with historical parks, buildings and neighborhoods, it's only fitting that a lot of television/movie filming happens here. In re-creating these iconic comic book characters as live-action heroes, a lot of the filming of these shows took place at historical sites right here in New York City. This photo of Jon Bernthal in the Punisher series was captured in Greenpoint, Brooklyn during an early scene in the show.
